Echocardiogram (ECG)

Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) is the process of detecting the nature and pattern of the electrical activity of the heart by putting electrodes across the chest of a patient. The recording thus obtained is plotted on a graph against voltage as one of the axis and time as the other one and such reading is called electrocardiogram (ECG).

ECG is a totally painless, safe, essential and a non-invasive procedure to diagnose structural defects, coronary artery disease and the pumping capacity of the heart.

Electrocardiogram is essential for precise diagnosis and further medication, especially when a patient is suffering or is likely to suffer from the following conditions:

1. Unexplained chest pain or angina pectoris can happen anytime, anywhere. The proper cause of chest pain can be effectively found out by an ECG, which helps in determining whether it is a heart attack, pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart) or angina itself.
2. Causative factors behind dizziness, fainting or rapid, irregular heart beatings.
3. The hypertrophy of heart and arrhythmias can be found out by ECG. If a pacemaker is implanted within the chest, then its effectiveness in maintaining normal heartbeat can also be interpreted by ECG readings.
